What makes you you? What makes you different from me? Identity is a widely used term but ever so hard to define. For that very reason, it has long charmed philosophers but was somehow loathed by neuroscientists. This session will take you on a journey in search of a biological interpretation of the concept of identity, through the lens of cultural and social constructs to the core of the physical brain. As the brain morphs and adjusts exquisitely to the ecosystem, the cultural challenges of the twenty-first century with its screen-based technologies mean that we are facing unprecedented changes to identity itself, and therefore to how our brains rewire themselves.

Session objectives:
  1. Explore the current social backdrop of exclusion
  2. Understand the key principles of developing conscious inclusion and driving social change
  3. Raise awareness of unconscious bias, understand how it is part of human nature, what evolutionary and biological purpose it serves, and how it plays out in our everyday behaviours, colouring our realities
  4. Understand how culture shapes our brain and sense of self
  5. Build a personal action plan for developing more inclusive behaviours and promoting social justice.
